Waikane Valley Restoration Advisory Board Meeting

Waikane Valley Restoration Advisory Board Meeting

April 15, 2009

7:00 to 9:00 pm

Wai’ahole Elementary School

Public Meeting to discuss the Marine Corps clean up of unexploded munitions in the Kamaka family land in Waikane Valley.

Background

In the 1940s, the military leased nearly 1000 acres of land in Wai’ahole and Waikane Valleys for training with an agreement to return the land in its original condition.   One of the families whose land was leased was the Kamaka family, who had 187 acres in Waikane valley.  This happened to be one of the areas where the heaviest live fire artillery training took place. After the land was returned to the family in the 1970s, Raymond Kamaka began farming the land until unexploded ordnance began to turn up.  When he asked the Marine Corps to clean up the munitions as agreed, the Marines instead moved to condemn the property.   After a long legal and political battle the land was condemned. Raymond refused to accept the court’s ruling and the “blood money” from the military.

In 2003, the Marines announced plans  to resume jungle warfare training in Waikane, geared to fighting insurgencies in the Philippines.  The community blasted the expansion of traning in Waikane and called instead for the clean up and return of the land.   The jungle warfare idea was scrapped, but the Marines refused to discuss clean up at that time.

Then quietly around 2006, the Marine Corps officially “closed” Waikane as an active range, which triggered the Department of Defense Installation Restoration Program (IRP) and the commencement of clean up procedures.   Clean up procedures under the IRP usually have a joing community-military Restoration Advisory Committee to monitor the design and execution of the clean up.

The Waikane Valley RAB began in 2007 and last met in April 2008.   It overseas only the Marine Corps clean up on the Kamaka parcel in Waikane.  There is also an Army Corps of Engineers munitions clean up underway in the remaining portions of Waikane valley under a different program, the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS).   The Army program is several years further along than the Marine Corps clean up. It does not have a RAB.

The Makua Sunrise ceremony moved into the valley the following year and has been held there ever since.

Participants are welcome to share a prayer, song, poem or thoughts. There is usually a potluck gathering at the beach after the event.

The Collective for Equality, Justice, and Empowerment, a.k.a. CEJE (pronounced “siege”), is a student-run Registered Independent Organization based in Honolulu , at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. CEJE is an open collective which welcomes and encourages intergenerational and inter/intracultural activism among a wide range of anti-oppressive groups, both on campus and in the larger local, national, and international community.

This collective serves as a safe space for individual and community decolonization, critical discussion, and creative, holistic exploration of liberatory art and activism.

We aim to utilize our resources in the university community to in order to serve as a bridging mechanism between academia and activism. We are currently engaged with two primary internal committees, the LGBTQIA Committee, and the Reproductive Justice/End Structural Violence Committee.

Founded by US women of color, third world women, indigenous women, and allies of these communities- CEJE is an egalitarian collective that works to illuminate and nurture networks of community organizations and individuals, who share common progressive visions while advocated for through specific issue areas. Our goal is to bring people together in solidarity, while engaging our own social locations and identities-in order to non-violently challenge and dismantle the politically, economically, biologically, culturally, and environmentally-ecologically oppressive and violent systems and institutions that have kept us divided, and nearly conquered, for generations. Through recovering genealogies, sharing our narratives, and moving forward as agents on behalf of our ancestors and future descendants-our hope is for a better world.

FTA!

Film Showing of FTA!

UH Manoa Architecture Auditorium & Courtyard

Thursday, March 19, 2009

6:30-7:30 Pre-film music, poetry and displays

7:30-9:00 Showing of FTA!

What was the FTA?

On November 25, 1971 5,000 people packed FTA Show at the Civic Auditorium in Honolulu. The show, featuring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Rita Martinson, Country Joe McDonald,, Len Chandler Jr., and more had already played outside of Fort Bragg, Fort Ord, Fort Lewis, and other bases in the U.S. and was headed to Okinawa, South Korea, The Philippines, and Japan. The poster for the show read:
“The G.I. movement exists on nearly every United States mlitary installation around the world. It is made up of American servicemen and women who have come to realize that if there is to be an end to the U.S. military involvement in South East Asia — and end to the war — it is they who must end it.

“In response to the invitation of servicemen and women within the G.I. movement we have formed the F.T.A. Show in order to support their fight to end discrimination against people because of race, sex, class, religion, and personal or political belief.” – The F.T.A. Show

In 1972 a film documenting the tour was released to packed audiences in the U.S. It was immediately banned by the military, and five days after its release it was pulled from the theatres.

Now it’s back! It’s a rollicking film to learn from, catch a glimpse of the anti-war movement that rocked the country, and the role G.I.’s themselves played within that movement. The film is filled with political satire, songs, and the voices of G.I.’s speaking out against the war. It’s fun, funky, and deadly serious! It’s more than a glimpse of history – it holds lessons for today.

On Thursday (the 6th anniversary of the war on Iraq) World Can’t Wait will show the film. For the hour before the film there will be a “fair” featuring displays of archival material from the GI Movement in Hawai`i, as well as live music and poetry, displays and information tables in the courtyard. Bring your bento, browse, and socialize.

What can YOU do to help?

WERE YOU AT THE 1971 FTA SHOW? Or do you know others who were there? Let us know!

DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION WANT A TABLE? If your organization is fighting for justice in today’s profoundly unjust world, you can have a table! Gay rights? Native rights? Gay rights? Anti-War? Women’s rights? Let us know if you want a table.

SPREAD THE WORD and BE THERE! If you want a copy of the leaflet for the film to send to your friends let us know (we can’t attach the leaflet to this mass list, but you can send it on to up to 50 people). Announce the event in your classes. Tell your friends and co-workers. This is a film for EVERYONE!

Where is the Architecture Auditorium On University Avenue, directly across from the YWCA on the University side of the University/Metcalf intersection. There will be signs and blue flags on the street. There’s parking ($3) on the bottom floor and an elevator in the parking lot. There’s also a bus stop in front of the building.

Call to Join Anti-NATO Protests in Strasbourg

Call for mobilization

Demonstration April 4th in Strasbourg

In not less than four weeks we will be non-violently and creatively protesting against Nato in Strasbourg. Until then there is much to do and organize. In order to send beautiful pictures of our protests in the City of Democracy and Peace to the citizens of the world we need to intensify our efforts in mobilizing a broad range of people. Those need to be addressed that do not know about the protests and also those that have been approached already need to be invited again.

We have to leave the meetings rooms now and go the the people. But also many of our friends and colleagues are not convinced to go to Strasbourg!

It is of major significance that we increase our efforts in mobilizing participants to join our protests. Only with them, coming from all parts of the world and society, we will be able to send powerful and colorful images of non-violent protests against Nato around the world.
Nato means the opposite of our ideals, means war and spending huge amounts of money not for social and ecological changes.

To be in Strasbourg means to be apart of the world wide movement for democracy and will defend the constitutions and the human rights. It is our right to demonstrate in the City of Strasbourg. We will get it when many people are coming.

We have to show to the world that the peace movement is an international and big force, independently and defending their rights.

Come to Strasbourg join us. Enlarge your efforts, strengthen the mobilization: we need every woman and man.
